MoCCA 2007 Report Day One

We're all resting back at the Windsor Hotel in Chinatown after a fine meal in Little Italy and we're just working up the energy to attack the little white box from Caffe Roma for what is definitely going to be a fine dessert for all. Today was very busy!

Our neighbors are Becky Cloonan to the left and Tyler Page and Cori Doerrfeld to the right. We've been bumping into Cori and Tyler for ages at conventions, so it's funny to see all the current midwesterners jammed together in the big room on the first floor of the Puck Building. We opted for a full table this year and are enjoying the extra space. Last year we had four fewer books and half a table and we were hurting for space.

I took the main watch at the table today, while Carter, Will, Ian, and Hanna roamed the hall and the city. Friend of CLP Todd Lovata was also there today and he bumped into some old friends from high school working the convention. I got (or rather, Hanna kindly acquired for me) the new collections of Fletcher Hanks and Drew Friedman cartoons, and that just about does me. You have to go in with goals or you'll buy a million minis.

Todd and I swear we saw Cassandra Peterson one row down, but famous people in 3-D confuse me.

We sold some books, got a lot of interested folks who walked away secure in the knowledge that they can go right to their local bookstore to acquire the fine books they saw later, and soaked in the town, along with a bit of wine. Burp.

Hanna also had an idea that she wants to share with all convention runners everywhere. It is this: please install a quiet reading room, away from the scrum and the noise for people to pause and collect themselves after braving the gauntlet. This will convince folks who might otherwise leave early due to sensory overload to pause within and give it another go before leaving for the day. Anyone who does this please call it "The Reading Room" or "Hanna's Sanity Lounge".

Tomorrow if you go to MoCCA, you'll find Carter, Will, and Ian at the CLP table, and Hanna and I will do the exploring. Whee! More tomorrow.

Hope that you liked my Fletcher Hanks book.

For readers unfamiliar with Hanks work, may I suggest that you go to the BONUS page of my website and see the bizarre Fantomah story that is NOT included in the book:

www.fletcherhanks.com

Also, if you are contemplating purchasing the book, I suggest that you hop to it. It is crashing up the Amazon charts with a friggin' bullet and Fantagraphics had a small press run. It may sell out! What a world!

It was pretty mind-altering stuff. I couldn't get over the line similarities to later (esp. underground) styles. It really looks like the product of a later hand.
